In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, when physical interactions were restricted, numerous businesses and professions had to find ways to continue operating, including Financial Institutions, Journalist & Media Personnel, Hospitality, Law Enforcement, and also the Judiciary among others.

I recall an incident just before the lockdown when a High Court Judge, returning from a conference, appeared perplexed as he approached me with questions about virtual meetings and streaming activities. His upcoming conferences were to be held virtually, and he found himself lacking basic computer application knowledge. This predicament is not uncommon, as many individuals have left technology predominantly to the younger generation.

The world is evolving at an unprecedented pace, and the Internet has become an integral part of our lives. The Covid-19 situation highlighted the pressing need for all professionals to embrace technology. Every profession, business, and activity now requires a certain level of tech proficiency to ensure smooth operations. Those who fail to adapt will inevitably be left behind or face significant challenges in keeping up with the rapidly changing landscape, potentially needing to hire tech experts at considerable costs.

While adapting to technology may be challenging for those above middle age and the elderly, it is crucial for millennials and Gen Z to not only acquire vast knowledge about tech and use social media but also to develop pro-tech skills relevant to their career interests.

Tech skills encompass a wide range of areas necessary to drive careers forward. Some examples include Digital Marketing, Data Analysis, UI/UX Design, Software Engineering, AI/Machine Learning Engineer, and Project Management. The list is extensive and ever-expanding.

Identifying the tech skills that can advance your career is essential. Equipping yourself with the necessary skills and mastering them will undoubtedly yield benefits. Although the returns may not be immediate for everyone, investing in tech skills pays off in the long run. Consider the example of a Judge struggling to conduct online meetings and then having to invest significant sums to acquire basic skills that could have been ingrained during their younger years.

Nearly two decades ago, companies highly valued employees with Microsoft Word and typing skills. However, the game has completely changed. Applying for a Secretary position in an established institution today merely with typing and Word skills, even with a BSc and MBA, will not suffice. Relevant skills such as Data Analysis and Project Management are now imperative.

As the digital era continues to unfold, professionals of all ages must recognize the significance of tech skills. Embracing technology, acquiring relevant skills, and staying adaptable are essential steps-towards success in the modern business landscape. By investing in tech skills today, individuals can position themselves for greater opportunities and ensure their relevance in an increasingly tech-driven world.
